Can You Combine Collagen Serums With AHAs, BHAs, or Niacinamide?

Which actives work alongside collagen serums — and which to avoid and when

Medically reviewed · Updated April 2026

The short answer

Yes — with timing. Collagen serums complement most actives, but the order and skin state matter. Post-procedure, some actives should be avoided entirely for 7–14 days.

REVAGI The Recombinant Serum is free from AHAs, BHAs, retinoids, and fragrance — designed to be layered safely with your routine, and used alone during the post-procedure window.

The Compatibility Principle

Collagen serums — especially recombinant collagen — have a neutral pH and no active exfoliating or cell-turnover ingredients. This makes them highly compatible as a base layer under most other skincare ingredients. The key question is not whether they can be combined — it is when and in what order.

Ingredient-by-Ingredient Guide

Ingredient Compatible? How to layer Post-procedure?
AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid) ✔ In routine Collagen serum first, AHA after 5 min ✘ Avoid 10–14 days post-procedure
BHAs (salicylic acid) ✔ In routine Collagen serum first, BHA after 5 min ✘ Avoid 10–14 days post-procedure
Niacinamide ✔ Yes Either order, same or separate steps ✔ From Day 5–7 at low concentration
Hyaluronic acid ✔ Yes Apply HA before or after collagen serum on damp skin ✔ From Day 1 — highly compatible
Vitamin C ✔ In routine Collagen serum first, vitamin C in mornings ✔ From Day 7–10 post-procedure
Retinoids ✔ In routine Collagen serum first, retinoid in evenings only ✘ Avoid 7–14 days post-procedure
SPF ✔ Yes Always last step in the morning ✔ From Day 2 — non-negotiable

The Post-Procedure Exception

The compatibility rules above apply to healthy, intact skin. After CO2 laser, pico laser, or RF microneedling, the skin is temporarily compromised — more permeable, more reactive, and more sensitive. During this window:

  • Use recombinant collagen serum only for the first 48–72 hours
  • No AHAs, BHAs, retinoids, or vitamin C until skin has normalised — typically Day 7–14
  • Reintroduce actives one at a time, starting with the gentlest first
  • SPF 50+ every morning from Day 2
